Book design for the dummy of Hayati, a project by italian-moroccan photographer Karim El Maktafi.
Hayati is an Arabic term that means “my life”. It is usually used towards a loved one, as a sign of affection. Son of moroccan immigrants, born and raised in Italy, Karim balances between two realities that at first sight might seem incompatible. Growing up between two worlds forced him to sharpen his gaze and to compare these perspectives which often diverge from each other.
The book reflects this duality, being conceived as a mix between these two worlds, one of his family and his moroccan tradition, the other of his friends and Italian habits. The narration develops in two places: Italy, where Karim is born and lives, and Morocco, a country he visits every year with his family after a long travel by car.
